Wales Rugby History 2008-2011

Wales National Rugby Union Team represents Wales in International Rugby Union Tournaments. Welsh Rugby Union (RU) governing body was established in 1881. Wales played their first international match against England in 1881. Welsh rugby struggled between the first and second World Wars. The International Rugby Board regards Wales as a Tier One rugby nation and is ranked fourth in the world by the result of International Rugby Board on 17th October 2011.

Wales National Rugby Union Team went on to beat England 26-19 after being down 16-3 after just 23 minutes. It was their first victory at Twickenham in 20 years, on 2nd February 2008. Wales' next two matches were at home to Scotland and Italy, which Wales won 30-15 and 47-8 respectively. Wales went on to won the Triple Crown beating Ireland 12–16 in Dublin and in the final game of the championship, Wales sealed their second Six Nations Grand Slam in four championships by beating France 29-12 at the Millennium Stadium.

In 2008 Shane Williams was declared International Rugby Board Player of the Year, the first Welshman to be honored with the title since it started in 2001. The same week Wales defeated Australia 21-18 in the game that celebrated 100 years since their first meeting, making Wales the only Northern Hemisphere nation to defeat a Tri-Nations country during the Autumn Internationals of 2008. This sent Wales up to fifth in the world rankings making Wales the highest ranked team in the Northern Hemisphere for the first time since rankings was established in 2003. Wales National Rugby Union Team defeated Samoa and Argentina by-13 and 33-16 respectively. Wales lost All Blacks by 12-19 and from Australia by 12-33 in Autumn International 2009.

Rugby World Cup 2011 is the seventh edition of International Rugby Board. IRB selected New Zealand as host nation in preference to Japan and South Africa at a meeting in Dublin on 17 November 2005. Rugby WC 2011 is the largest sporting event ever held in New Zealand, eclipsing the 1987 Rugby World Cup, 1990 Commonwealth Games, 1992 Cricket World Cup and the 2003 America's Cup. 95,000 overseas visitors are expected to travel to New Zealand for Rugby World Cup 2011. Rugby World Cup 2011 schedule was spans over six weeks, started with a match between hosts New Zealand and Tonga at Eden Park, Auckland on 9 September 2011, won by All Blacks. Wales was in Pool D along with South Africa, Samoa, Fiji and Namibia. Wales qualified for quarter final and was defeated world cup runner up France in semi final. In the final All Blacks defeated France by 8-7 and won Webb Ellis Cup in the crowd of 61079 at Eden Park, Auckland on Monday, 24 October 2011. New Zealand win their second Rugby World Cup title after 24 years, it set off a series of celebrations the length and breadth of the nation.
