Wales Rugby History 1990-1999

Wales National Rugby Union Team represents Wales in international rugby union tournaments. Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) governing body was established in 1881. Wales played their first international match against England in 1881. Welsh rugby struggled between the first and second World Wars. The International Rugby Board regards Wales as a Tier One rugby nation and is ranked fourth in the world by the result of International Rugby Board on 17th October 2011.

The nineties was one of the worst periods in the history of the game as defections to Rugby League and internecine struggles decimated the national side. A Five Nations whitewash followed in 1990 and in 1991.

Rugby World Cup 1991 was the second edition of the International Rugby Union competition and was jointly hosted by five European countries England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France (the teams which participated in the Five Nations Championship). Wales was in pool C, along with the Australia, Western Samoa and Argentina. Wales lost their matches from Western Samoa by 13-16, Argentina by 16-7 and Australia by 3-38. Wales were dumped out of the World Cup by the little known Western Samoa in the pool stages. The World Cup Final was played at Twickenham in London. Australia won the title by defeating England twelve points to six in the final. Wales National Rugby Union Team won only two games in 1992 Five Nations Championship and only one game in 1993 Championship by defeating England 10-9. Wales won the Five Nations Championship in 1994.

Rugby World Cup 1995 was the third edition of International Rugby Union competition and was hosted by South Africa. It was the first time that all matches were played in a single country. It was also the first time that South Africa participated in the tournament following the end of their international sports boycott due to the apartheid regime and had a fairytale ending. Wales was in pool C along with New Zealand, Ireland and Japan. Wales won from Japan by 10-57 and lost two matches from New Zealand by 34-9 and from Ireland by 24-23 again not qualifying for the World Cup quarter-finals. Rugby World Cup final was played at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on 24 June 1995 South Africa defeated New Zealand 15-12.

Kevin Bowring became Wales' first professional coach when he replaced Alex Evans in 1995. Things looked to have improved with the appointment of Coach Graham Henry in 1998, and the return of several internationals from rugby league. After defeating England 32-31 to prevent them from winning a grand slam and allowing Scotland to become overall winners, of the 1998-1999 Five Nations, Wales began a ten match unbeaten run which saw Graham Henry heralded as the 'Great Redeemer.'

Rugby World Cup 1999 was the fourth edition of International Rugby Union competition and was the first time to be held in Rugby Union's professional era. Principal host was Wales, although the majority of matches were played outside the country shared between England, France, Scotland and Ireland. Welsh team was awarded the automatic qualification berth offered to the hosts. Only four automatic qualification places were available for the Rugby World Cup 1999. Other three went to the top three teams from the Rugby World Cup 1995 champions (South Africa), runners-up (New Zealand), and third-place play-off winners (France). Rugby World Cup 1999 final was held in Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. Australia claimed their second world title, defeating France in the final by 35-12 on 6th November 1999. The overall attendance for the Rugby World Cup 1999 was 1.75 million.
