Wales Rugby History 2000-2005

Wales National Rugby Union Team represents Wales in International Rugby Union Tournaments. Welsh Rugby Union (RU) governing body was established in 1881. Wales played their first international match against England in 1881. Welsh rugby struggled between the first and second World Wars. The International Rugby Board regards Wales as a Tier One rugby nation and is ranked fourth in the world by the result of International Rugby Board on 17th October 2011.

Wales National Rugby Union Team won from Argentina and Ireland in 2001 and 2002 led to Henry's resignation in February 2002, his assistant Steve Hansen took over. Further defeats led to perhaps Wales’s makes a lot of big changes in a short time to improve its effectiveness in 2003.

Rugby World Cup 2003 was the fifth Rugby World Cup and was originally planned to be combine hosted by Australia and New Zealand. But all games were shifted to Australia following a contractual dispute over ground signage rights between the New Zealand Rugby Football Union and Rugby World Cup Limited. Rugby World Cup 2003 began with the match between the host nation Australia and Argentina at Telstra Stadium in Sydney, Australia defeating Argentina by 24-8. Wales was in Pool D along with New Zealand, Italy, Canada and Tonga. Wales won three of their four matches. Wales defeated Canada by 41-10, Wales defeated Tonga by 27-20 and Wales defeated Italy 27–15. Wales lost from New Zealand by 53-37. Wales lost from England in quarter final by 28-17. The final was played between Australia and England at Sydney's Telstra Stadium also in front of a crowd of 82,957. England won the tournament, defeating Australia in the final 20-17.

Wales National Rugby Union Team won their first Six Nations Grand Slam coached by Mike Ruddock in 2005 their first championship title since 1994 and their first Grand Slam since 1978. Wales opened the tournament with an 11-9 win over England at the Millennium Stadium in the attendance of 74500 people, thanks to a late long range penalty from Gavin Henson. After a win over Italy by 17-28, Wales faced France and won by 18-24, Wales were losing 15–6 at first half and fought back in the second half to win, and the game was named the best of the tournament. Wales beat Scotland by 46-22 and then, in front of a capacity crowd at the Millennium Stadium, played their final game against Ireland. Wales defeated Ireland by 32-20 and won Grand Slam since 1978. The sights and sounds of the 2005 Grand Slam will never be forgotten as Gareth Thomas and Michael Owen accepted the coveted RBS Six Nations Trophy after their epic win over Ireland. There was a capacity crowd inside the Millennium Stadium and 30,000 more outside Cardiff City Hall watching the game on a big screen. It was a day that will never be forgotten, the day a nation rejoiced in a new set of heroes as rugby underlined its status as Wales's national sport.
