Wales Rugby History 1920-1939

Wales National Rugby Union Team represents Wales in international rugby union tournaments. Wales National Rugby Union Team governing body Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) was established in 1881. Wales played their first international match against England in 1881. Welsh rugby struggled between the first and second World Wars. The International Rugby Board (IRB) regards Wales as a Tier One rugby nation and is ranked fourth in the world by the result of International Rugby Board (IRB) on 17th October 2011.

Wales National Rugby Union Team marked decrease in the post-First World War. The worst period was during the 1920s when the team's lackluster performance seemed to mirror the industrial recession, which hit South Wales particularly hard. Total 42 matches played, only 17 were won and three drawn. The feeling of sadness that makes people think there is no hope for the future, resulted in around half-a-million people leaving Wales to find work including many Welsh rugby union internationals who moved to northern England and joined rugby league, Rugby League benefited enormously.

Wales National Rugby Union Team managed only seven victories five of them against France during 1923 and 1928. During that decade France also managed to defeat Wales and achieved their first victory over Wales in 1928. A very big changing in Welsh selection policy created problems in the mid-1920s. In 1924, thirty five different players were selected for Wales' four matches, with a different captain for each, only one player, Charlie Pugh, played in all four matches. The Welsh team grew alongside the economy during the thirties.Wales won the Championship for the first time in nine years in 1931 after two tries from Jack Morley against Ireland in Belfast. They got their first win at the new home of English rugby, in January 1933, at Twickenham after 23 years of trying in captsainicy of Watcyn Thomas.

Wales National Rugby Union again defeated New Zealand second time in 1935 Wales in Cardiff in by 13-12, with Haydn Tanner making his first appearance. It was an era when players like Jerry Shea, Ivor Jones, Jack Bassett and Wilf Wooller captured the imagination.
