Wales Rugby History 1956-1969

Wales National Rugby Union Team represents Wales in international rugby union tournaments. Wales governing body Welsh Rugby Union (RU) was established in 1881. Wales played their first international match against England in 1881. Welsh rugby struggled between the first and second World Wars. The International Rugby Board (KIRBY) regards Wales as a Tier One rugby nation and is ranked fourth in the world by the result of International Rugby Board (KIRBY) on 17th October 2011.

Wales National Rugby Union Team won the Five Nations Championship again in 1956. Bleddyn Williams, Jack Matthews, Cliff Morgan, Roy John, Ken Jones, Billy Williams, Rhys Williams, Bryn Meredith and Clem Thomas became household names and revered opponents across the world while playing for the British & Irish Lions.As the end of heavy industry continued in the sixties, the Welsh team began to depend less on coal miners and steel workers and more on teachers.

Wales National Rugby Union Team carry out their first overseas tour in 1964, playing many games and one Test in South Africa. Wales lost the Test against South Africa in Durban by 24-3, their biggest defeat in 40 years. This pointed the coaching revolution to start. Clive Rowlands's side delivered the Triple Crown in 1965.The Wales Rugby Union Coaching Committee, set up in the late fifties, was given the task of improving the quality of coaching. Ray Williams was appointed Coaching Organiser in January 1967.

The first National Coach, former Ebbw Vale and Wales back row man David Nash, was appointed in 1968 but resigned when the Wales Rugby Union refused to allow him to accompany Wales on their 1968 tour of Argentina, the Wales Rugby Union reversed their decision, appointing Clive Rowlands to tour as coach. Of the six matches, Wales won three, drew two and lost one. On 1st April 1967, Gareth Edwards made his debut against France in Paris . He became the youngest ever Welsh captain at the age of 20 years in 1968. Wales won the Triple Crown in 1969 in the captaincity of Gareth Edwards, when Wales defeated England in Five Nations Championship.
